Kliff Kingsbury is the Favorite to be Next Houston Cougars Coach

NCAA Football: Texas Tech at Texas

Kliff Kingsbury might find himself back in the Big 12 Conference. At least that’s what the oddsmakers are suggesting.

According to Betonline.ag, the former Texas Tech and Arizona Cardinals coach is the betting favorite to become the next head coach of the Houston Cougars.

Next Houston Cougars Football Coach

Kliff Kingsbury: 2/1
Jeff Traylor: 3/1
Gary Patterson: 5/1
Willie Fritz: 5/1
Jeff Banks: 9/1
Will Stein: 11/11
GJ Kinne: 12/1
Emmett Jones: 14/1
Jimbo Fisher: 16/1

Kingsbury spent this past season as the quarterbacks coach at USC after getting fired as the Arizona Cardinals head coach following the 2022 season. He’s only 44 years old and clearly knows the Big 12 after spending several seasons as the head coach at his alma mater, Texas Tech.

Kingsbury’s career record at Texas Tech was 35-40, with a 19-35 record in Big 12 play over six seasons. During his four seasons in the NFL, Kingsbury went 28-37-1, highlighted by a trip to the playoffs during the 2021 season, where the Cardinals lost to the Rams in the Wild Card Round of the NFL Playoffs.

Meantime, Jeff Traylor is a name who has been atop this list since the Houston job opened, given his success at UTSA. But Traylor is making good money (nearly $3 million) and may want to wait for what he perceives to be a better job.

Gary Patterson was a special assistant in 2022 for the Longhorns following his exit from TCU during the 2021 season. WIllie Fritz has had success at Tulane, while Jeff Banks is a top assistant for Steve Sarkisian at Texas.

Houston fired Dana Holgorsen on Sunday after a 4-8 record his first season in the Big 12. Holgorsen had a $15 million buyout.
