Look: Houston Coach Dana Holgorsen Honors Mike Leach With Sweatshirt

NCAA Football: Cincinnati at Houston

The Houston Cougars played Louisiana-Lafayette in the Independence Bowl on Friday afternoon and UH head coach Dana Holgorsen was on the sidelines for the first time since the passing of his mentor and friend Mike Leach, who passed away last week after a heart attack.

And in honor of his friend, Leach was rocking a Mississippi State hoodie on the sidelines.

Here’s what he looked like:

Holgorsen and Leach go back to the early 1990’s, when they both coached at Valdosta State under Hal Mumme. Then, Leach hired Holgorsen to join him when he got the head coaching job at Texas Tech, where he worked his way up from inside wide receivers coach to offensive coordinator by 2005.

The Red Raiders were No. 7 nationally prior to Holgorsen becoming offensive coordinator and raised their yardage total to No. 4 in 2005, his first season directing the offense. In his two years as offensive coordinator, his squad was nationally ranked No. 8 in 2006 and No. 3 in 2007. In 2007, Texas Tech led the nation in passing (470.31), was No. 2 in total offense (529.62) and was No. 7 in scoring offense (40.9).

The next year, he became the head coach at Houston for his first stint.

Earlier this week, many in the college football world mourned the loss of the head coach, who passed away at 61 years old.
