TCU to Hire Former Boise State Coach Andy Avalos as New DC
TCU football moved fast to fill the role of defensive coordinator as the team elected to hire former Boise State Head Coach Andy Avalos as the team’s new defensive coordinator.
The Horned Frogs announced on Sunday night that the team would be moving on from DC Joe Gillespie, and would move fast to find a new coach from outside the program to bring in as his replacement.
While the team felt it was best to move on from Joe Gillespie as defensive coordinator, TCU did not wait long to bring in an experienced coach to Sonny Dykes’ coaching staff. According to a recent report from ActionNetworkHQ’s Brett McMurphy, TCU was able to secure the 2022 Mountain West Coach of the Year, Andy Avalos, after he was fired last month at Boise State after getting off to a 5-5 in the 2023 season.
Avalos spent two and a half seasons as the head coach for the Boise State Broncos and finished his head coaching career off with an overall record of 22-14 during his time in Boise. In the 2022 season, Avalos led Boise State to a 10-4 overall record, 8-0 in conference play, which helped the Broncos advance to the Mountain West Championship Game where the team lost 28-16 to Fresno State.
The former Head Coach has experience as a DC in his career as he spent time as the defensive coordinator for Oregon under Mario Cristobal from 2019-2020. He helped lead the Ducks to two Pac-12 Championships during his time in Eugene and was named a 2019 semifinalist for the Broyles Award, which is given out to the top assistant coach in the country.
Avalos and TCU will have a long offseason to work on schemes, recruiting, and completely overhauling things on the defensive side of the ball, but at least one good thing for Horned Frogs fans to focus on is the fact that they did not have to wait long to find out who will be running the defense in 2024.
