Mike Gundy says Cowboys ‘not that far off’ from Mississippi State, FSU success

Last season, Oklahoma State opened the season with a 21-3 win over Mississippi State.

Yes, that Mississippi State – the same school that has risen to No. 1 in the AP poll this week after starting 6-0.

Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy has made a habit in recent weeks of downplaying the Cowboys as “average” in several areas, but when asked about MSU’s ascent in just a year, Gundy said his young team is in that ballpark.

“(We) played an SEC team that now is ranked No. 1 in the country. They’re the same group of guys, now they’re a little bit more experienced,” Gundy said on the Big 12’s weekly coaches’ teleconference. “This year we played the No. 1 team in the country (Florida State) and lost a close game.

“We’re not that far off. We’ve still got a lot of work ahead of us here, but we’re not that far off. It does help develop your confidence.”
