Three years ago, OSU led Baylor 34-0 at halftime and eventually led 49-3. And Mike Gundy had a thought. In darker times, the Cowboys had been on the wrong end of a bunch of those blowouts. He wondered if it ever would happen again.
Stop wondering.
Saturday at Amon Carter Stadium, the 12th-ranked Horned Frogs routed the 15th-ranked Cowboys 42-9 in a game that shows the polls often take a break from reality. First, OSU answered TCU touchdowns with field goals. Then OSU answered TCU touchdowns with punts. And thus came a return to yesteryear.
This is what Cowboy football once was like. High hopes swamped in a Big 12 blowout. Doesn’t really happen anymore. Or at least hadn’t in a long time. This was OSU’s most lopsided loss since 2008 at Lubbock, a 56-20 browbeating by Texas Tech.
“Not something we’re used to around here,” said linebacker Ryan Simmons.
Defensive coordinator Glenn Spencer called it a “woodshed” day.
“Not a good feeling,” said tailback Des Roland. “A feeling you really can’t explain.”
