Tony Romo Believes Former OSU QB Mason Rudolph is ‘For Real’

NCAA Football: Oklahoma State at Pittsburgh

Despite the Pittsburgh Steelers losing in the Wildcard Round of the NFL Playoffs on Monday night, CBS’ Tony Romo raved about former Oklahoma State Cowboy Mason Rudolph during the broadcast.

Romo highlighted Rudolph’s rocky path to the starting job in Pittsburgh and mentioned that he feels the South Carolina native is following a similar path to that of another former Big 12 quarterback, Geno Smith.

“I’m really impressed with the archetype of his career,” Romo said. “You know, you expect him to be a career backup, and he hadn’t been very successful, and you put him in and they’re riding the hot hand right now. To me, he has developed an archetype like Geno Smith in Seattle. He is for real.”

The Steelers entered the season with Kenny Pickett under center but after multiple injuries and some inconsistent play, Pittsburgh elected to roll with Mason Rudolph through the final weeks of the season and into the playoffs.

Despite seeing the field in limited games, Rudolph finished off the 2023 season with 77 completions for 948 yards and a touchdown to interception ratio of 5-1.

While Rudolph’s future with the Steelers hangs in the balance of multiple key offseason decisions, the former Cowboy worked his way back into the conversation as the future starter in Pittsburgh.
