Pete’s 12 Thoughts on Week 9 in the Big 12

1. How soon before Sonny Cumbie and/or Doug Meachem are in the discussion for Power 5 head coaching jobs? The showcase they are putting on as Co-OC’s at TCU is unbelievable. If nothing else, the continued success, combined with the “co” title, rarely lasts long after egos get in the way of each other. I wouldn’t be shocked to see one of the two gone after this season.

2. Yes, TCU’s offense has made many a defense look bad this year, but, Texas Tech showed the worst display of tackling I’ve seen all season.

3. … that being said, Tech fans need to stick by head coach Kliff Kingsbury. The Red Raiders have one Conference win since October 26th, 2013. But, no one will have the desire to turn things around more than Kingsbury. Texas Tech cannot recruit a big-time college coach to Lubbock. So, the choices are a guy with “ties” like Kingsbury, or another Tommy Tuberville, who has no skin in the game, and will skip town once he finds a more lucrative deal.

4. Oklahoma State QB Daxx Garman hasn’t made enough progress to continue supporting him 100%. When he took over week 2, I saw the big arm, accurate deep ball, and bought into him for the long-term. I thought that once he got in the groove and had some games under his belt, the short to intermediate throws, and some of the other little things, would improve drastically. They haven’t. If Garman were a stock, I’d be losing my shirt by now.

5. I enjoyed listening to the garbage time of the Oklahoma State-West Virginia game on ESPN. Announcers Mike Patrick and Ed Cunningham spent quite some time talking about the unfounded Sports Illustrated accusations against Oklahoma State’s football program. They ripped the magazine (which I admittedly subscribe to), and didn’t hold back.

6. Oklahoma State’s Juwan Offray and Jhajuan Seales reportedly passed out while in the drive-thru line at Whataburger. Both players admitted to drinking. Offray was kicked off the team, while Seales was suspended for last Saturday’s game. There are two mistakes here. One, drinking and driving: very stupid. Secondly, anytime I went to eat fast food in college late at night, I walked through the drive-thru. First, to avoid drinking and driving. But, also because I knew I wouldn’t fall asleep standing in line at a drive-thru. Win win.

7. Here is our pro-Big 12/anti-SEC tweet of the week! Great stuff. Oh and let’s remind you… LSU is a two-loss team already.

8. I wrote on Friday in my picks that maybe having 26 JUCO players would catch up with Kansas State against a talented, and rapidly improving and maturing, Texas team. Boy, I was wrong. Part of the reason? Texas had 4 penalties by the 9:26 mark in the first quarter… Kansas State had 3 penalties… all day.

9. If you’re a high school senior offensive lineman looking to get some run ASAP, go to Austin. They are so thin at the position. RG Kent Perkins went down in the first quarter Saturday, it threw the line off and they were smoked most of the afternoon.

10. Can Kansas State run the table? I just don’t buy that they can. This team is so similar to the 2012 squad led by Collin Klein. They were #1 in the country and lost a late November game at Baylor by 28 points. They will be susceptible to teams like TCU, Baylor, and West Virginia. High octane offenses with 5 star athletes everywhere. But, to the Wildcats’ credit, that’s who Auburn is as well, and the Wildcats should have beaten the Tigers back in September.

11. I am beyond curious to see how the Playoff Committee poll comes down on Tuesday night. 5 SEC teams are ranked ahead of TCU. That’s bull. I believe the Horned Frogs could play with anyone in the SEC. How much does the Committee go by the current AP/Coaches polls. That’s the biggest question.

12. My picks were 2-1 this week. West Virginia was possibly the easiest money of the season. Sorry, OK State. Second straight week I lost with Texas. Such a sucker.
