After an impressive showing in the 2024 NFL Preseason, former Kansas State quarterback Skylar Thompson has earned the backup quarterback job in Miami.
Thompson, a 2022 seventh-round pick, beat out veteran quarterback Mike White for the job and will serve as QB2 behind Tua Tagovailoa.
Thompson will serve behind Tua Tagovailoa, who has stacked up some unfortunate injury history in his career. Tagovailoa has suffered multiple concussions, high ankle sprains, finger fractures, rib fractures, and shoulder injuries since being drafted in 2020.
After spending years with both Bill Snyder and Chris Klieman in Manhattan, the Miami Dolphins selected Thompson with the 247th pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.
Thompson has played in seven games during his NFL career, throwing for 534 yards, one touchdown, and three interceptions. Thompson was called on for the Dolphins’ 2022 playoff game against the Buffalo Bills, with their starter sidelined due to injury. The Kansas State product was narrowly defeated by Josh Allen and the Bills, 34-31, in the Wild Card round.
While Thompson needed to produce in the 2024 preseason to beat out Mike White, the former Wildcat answered the call. He threw for the ninth-most yards of any quarterback in the preseason, with 346 yards and a touchdown to interception ratio of 3-2.
Thompson and the Dolphins kick their season off on September 8th vs. the Jacksonville Jaguars.
