Time runs out on Cyclones in wild contest

Texas was eight yards away from a 21-0 lead and an easy victory. Then Iowa State pressure caused Longhorn quarterback Tyrone Swoopes to panic.

He threw an ill-advised pass across his body. The ball landed in the hands of Cyclone cornerback Nigel Tribune.

A rout became a brawl.

The teams traded big plays and scores on Saturday. Instead of a snoozer, ISU and Texas put together a wildly entertaining game where the Cyclones kept matching the Longhorns. When Texas kicker Nick Rose hit the game-winning 21-yard field goal with 3 seconds left there was no time left for one ISU rally. Texas made the last big play and won 48-45.

This was the kind of game people assume happens every week in the Big 12. Lots of scoring. Lots of offense. Lots of “I can’t believe that just happened” moments.
