Slow and steady doesn’t win the race. Fast and furious players do in the Big 12.
It’s a lesson Kane Seeley picked up in his first prolonged stint as Iowa State’s middle linebacker.
Now, with starter Jevohn Miller out with a torn ACL, it falls him and Alton Meeks on to quicken their learning curve while preparing for Kansas on Saturday (2:30 p.m. FSN).
“I am a little slow on some of the reads,” Seeley said. “I am just not as confident as I need to be.”
So he’s doing all he can to catch up.
Seeley didn’t react fast enough against No. 16 Oklahoma last week to keep the Sooners from making big plays.
He doesn’t want it to happen again. So he’s watching extra film. He’s talking more with the coaches. He’s doing anything that will help speed up his play.
“I really got to be on my game,” Seeley said. “Knowing exactly my keys, knowing exactly what is going on out there.”
The Cyclones (2-6, 0-5 Big 12) were forced to turn to Seeley, a sophomore, and Meeks, a redshirt freshman, after Miller was injured on the second play last week. The starting spot is an open competition. Both will get reps with the starting defense, but Seeley may have the inside track. He played more last week.
