Cyclones identify plenty to work on during bye week

When Iowa State football coach Paul Rhoads was asked what the Cyclones must work on after the Kansas game, a simple question required a lengthy answer.

Rhoads spoke for 41 seconds, mentioning 11 things, primarily dealing with defense, during the Big 12 teleconference on Monday.

“There is a short list for you,” Rhoads said.

The bye week following a disappointing 34-14 loss to the Jayhawks that Rhoads called embarrassing on Monday is a time for the Cyclones to regroup. That starts when they hit the practice field on Tuesday.

Expect ISU to work on the basics. Rhoads’ defensive issues fall into five key categories: lining up correctly, tackling properly, defending the deep ball and executing better in man coverage.

“We are diligently working to find some answers for open week preparation,” Rhoads said, “and the wait and see piece is how we can motivate them, how we can prepare them and coach them up and get them to play their tails off against the Red Raiders.”
