Steve Spagnuolo Shoots Down Idea Brock Purdy is a Game Manager
Former Iowa State quarterback Brock Purdy is heading to Super Bowl LVIII, and the debate continues as to whether or not the 49ers signal caller is a game manager or a game changer. One person solidly siding with Purdy as a “game changer” is Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo.
Spagnuolo raved about Purdy in his weekly press conference, mentioning that it wouldn’t take long to see Purdy’s ability show up on tape.
“All they gotta do is put the tape on, in my opinion,” Spagnuolo said. “We had some crossover film during the course of the year, but when you dive into it and you watch him, it’s not a quarterback that’s managing or all those tabs that they put on him, he’s for real.”
While Purdy has shown an ability to sling the ball around this season after recording 4,280 yards and a touchdown to interception ratio of 31-10, his athleticism was something that Spagnuolo highlighted as a problem area for Kansas City’s defense.
“He makes all the throws, he’s really really smart, and what I didn’t know is how athletic he is,” Spagnuolo added. “This is another quarterback that when you cover everything back there, he finds a lane and he can take off. He did it last week, he’s done it in every playoff game they’ve played, and he gets positive yards. It’s a lot of strain on us defensively. Thoroughly, thoroughly impressed with him.”
Purdy will have yet another opportunity to prove his doubters wrong in the Super Bowl matchup between Kansas City and San Fransisco. The game kicks off on Sunday, February 11th at 5:30 PM CT.
