Houston Cougars Land Baylor Transfer Guard LJ Cryer
LJ Cryer will remain in the Big 12 Conference next season, as he announced that he would transfer from Baylor to Houston during an Instagram Live on Sunday.
Cryer will join the Cougars, who are one of four teams that will join the Big 12 on July 1. The other three are BYU, Cincinnati and UCF.
Cryer’s announcement also comes just days after Houston landed another quality guard transfer in Temple’s Damian Dunn.
With Cryer, the Cougars get a player that has local knowledge of the Big 12, having played with the Bears for three seasons. He was part of the Bears’ 2021 national championship run in a bench role as a freshman. He’s been a starter when healthy each of the past two seasons.
Cryer averaged 15.0 points, 2.1 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game last season for the Bears. He shot 45.3 percent from the field, including 41.5 percent from the 3-point line on 6.2 attempts per contest.
His career averages are 11.3 points, 1.6 assists and 1.5 rebounds per game, as he’s shot 42.5 percent from long range.
He told Houston-based FOX 26 Sports Director Mark Berman earlier this week that he was focused on transferring to a Big 12 school.
“I’ve been looking at more of the Big 12 schools,” Cryer told Berman. “That’s really it right now. A lot of other schools have a lot to offer, but right now I’m thinking, as of today, that I’m trying to stay in the Big 12 Conference.”
Arkansas, Central Florida, Gonzaga, Houston, Illinois, Kansas, Kansas State, LSU, Oklahoma State, Texas A&M and some other high-major programs had all reached out to Cryer since he entered the portal, per 247Sports Brandon Jenkins.
