Former Houston AAC Rookie of Year Alton McCaskill Enters Transfer Portal

NCAA Football: Houston at Texas Tech

Houston running back Alton McCaskill will reportedly enter the NCAA Transfer Portal, leaving the Cougars without one of its most dynamic running backs as they head into the Big 12 in 2023.

McCaskill did not play in 2022 after tearing his ACL last spring, but was an incredible talent in 2021, earning Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year honors after rushing for 793 yards and 14 touchdowns. He also added 18 receptions for 115 yards and two scores that season, showing his ability to make plays out of the backfield as a receiver.

The initial report, which comes from FOX 26 Sports’ Mark Berman, gave a quote from Cougars’ head coach Dana Holgorsen who seemed stunned that McCaskill would leave.

“I don’t know where this came from,” Holgorsen said. “I appreciate everything he’s done for us. I appreciate his love for Houston and wish him the best of luck in the future. I wish him well.

“It’s a sad day. I was a little shocked because the kid had a good spring and then all of a sudden, boom, it’s over.”

Now that he can hear from other schools, McCaskill’s phone should be ringing off the hook. Before signing with Houston, McCaskill was rated as a four-star prospect and the No. 24 overall running back in the 2021 class, according to ESPN. Now, the former Conroe (TX) Oak Ridge product will be headed elsewhere, and rumors suggest it could be Boulder, Colorado.
