The Houston Cougars are working on assembling their 2023-24 men’s basketball roster and we’ll track every move here throughout the offseason.

Departures

F Reggie Chaney: He played his final year of eligibility for the Cougars. He played in 35 games (one start) and averaged 14 minutes per game. He averaged 3.0 points and 2.7 rebounds.

 

C Darius Bowser: The former Charleston Southern transfer had one year left going into the 2023-24 season. He played in just six games, with one start.

G Tramon Mark: Mark had a solid season for the Cougars, averaging 10.1 points and 4.9 rebounds per game. He also averaged a steal per game. He transferred to Arkansas after the season.

C Kiyron Powell: The redshirt freshman didn’t record a stat last season and transferred to Southern Indiana.

In the NBA Draft

G Marcus Sasser: He was Houston’s leading scorer last season, averaging 16.8 points. After the season, Sasser declared for the NBA Draft and surrendered his remaining eligibility.

F Jarace Walker: In just one season he got on NBA scouts’ radars quickly as he emerged as the Cougars’ second-leading scorer with 11.2 points per game. He also had 6.8 rebounds. Considered a potential lottery pick, he declared for the NBA Draft and surrendered his remaining eligibility.

In the Transfer Portal

G Mylik Wilson: Wilson did not play in 2022-23 after transferring to the Cougars from Texas Tech.

Arrivals Via Transfer

G LJ Cryer (from Baylor): The All-Big 12 Third-Team selection has two years of eligibility remaining after transferring in from the Cougars’ future league rivals. Cryer averaged 15 points, 2.1 rebounds and 2.0 assists last season.

 

G Damian Dunn (from Temple): The All-American Athletic Conference Third-Team selection has two years of eligibility remaining after transferring in from the Owls. Dunn averaged 15.4 points and 3.6 rebounds and lifted the Owls to a win over the Cougars in January.

Expected to Return

G Jamal Shead: He’ll return as the Cougars’ leading scorer from a season ago. He averaged 10.5 points and 3.0 rebounds.

C Cedric Lath: Lath did not play in a game for Houston in his first season.

G Ramon Walker Jr.: He played in just 10 games last season, with no starts. He averaged 2.5 points and 2.9 rebounds.

F Ja’Vier Francis: The sophomore played in 35 games last season, with one start, and averaged 4.3 points and 3.5 rebounds.

F J’Wan Roberts: The redshirt junior was the fifth-leading scorer on the Cougars last season, averaging 10.0 points. He also had a team-high 7.7 rebounds.

G Ryan Elvin: He played 15 games last season and played 44 minutes.

G Emanuel Sharp: He put together a solid redshirt freshman campaign, as he averaged 5.9 points and 2.2 rebounds.

 

G Terrance Arceneaux: He made an impact as a true freshman, playing in 34 games and averaging 3.7 points and 2.5 rebounds.

Class of 2023 Signees

C Joseph Tugler, 6-foot-7, Cy Falls (Houston, Texas): The No. 66 player in the country per 247Sports.com, the Cougars managed to keep the undersized center home.

C Jacob McFarland, 6-foot-10, Rancho Verde (Moreno Valley, Calif.): McFarland is a Top 100 player and four-star recruit and helped Houston procure a Top 25 overall class.

G Kordelius Jefferson, 6-foot-3, Martin HS (Arlington, Texas): Jefferson is a three-star guard but a Top 200 player and will have plenty of guards to learn from this season in Space City.
