Kevin Obanor, Texas Tech Appear to Make Subtle Statement Ahead of Big 12 Tournament
The Texas Tech Red Raiders are headed to Kansas City for the Big 12 Men’s Basketball Tournament without its head coach, putting the program in a peculiar situation.
Mark Adams, who is in his second year as the Red Raiders’ head basketball coach, was suspended by Texas Tech after using “inappropriate, unacceptable, and racially insensitive comments,” according to the University.
Adams reportedly told Texas Tech basketball players that they needed to be more receptive to his coaching, citing bible verses with elements of slavery, working, and obeying masters as a reference, telling one of his players there is “always a master and a servant.”
“I was quoting the scripture,” Adams said when asked about that dialogue.
Now, just a few days removed from the situation, Texas Tech is boarding a plane and heading to Kansas City to play in a tournament in which they now have the longest odds of winning, at +4000 according to BetOnline.
In TTU’s departure photos, the school and senior forward Kevin Obanor seemed to make a subtle statement regarding the issue with Adams. Take a look at the title of the book in Obanor’s right hand, which he seems to be aiming toward the camera.
If you can’t make out the title, it reads, “The Power of Positive Leadership.” Coincidence? Perhaps, but it certainly feels like a stance given the context of the situation.
Under new interim head coach Corey Williams, the Red Raiders will take on West Virginia to open up the conference tournament on Wednesday, with tip scheduled for 6:00 p.m. CT.
