Deion Sanders Loses Key Assistant Before 2024 College Football Season

NCAA Football: Colorado Spring Game

Deion Sanders and Colorado have lost a key assistant on special teams with just over a week until the Buffaloes open up their 2024 season.

Trevor Reilly, who served as the quality control analyst for the Buffaloes’ special teams unit, is no longer a part of the CU staff after serving in the same role for Coach Prime’s first season in Boulder.

While a QC analyst might not sound like a major loss for some staffs, Colorado now lacks a coach on the staff that is solely devoted to special teams.

Last season, Colorado ranked 47th nationally in special teams efficiency (per ESPN), and hopes to be an improved unit this year in a league where games are won and lost in the margins.

A former linebacker at Utah, Reilly was drafted by the New York Jets in the seventh round of the 2014 NFL Draft. Reilly spent four seasons in the league, two with the Jets (2014-15), one with the Miami Dolphins (2016), and one with the New England Patriots (2017).

Reilly started his coaching career with Sanders at Jackson State in 2021 and followed him to Colorado in 2023. His exit opened the door for Colorado to hire George Helow, who was brought on last week, according to Colorado beat writer Brian Howell.

Colorado will open the 2024 season against North Dakota State on Thursday, August 29, with kickoff scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on ESPN.
