Despite Colorado‘s Travis Hunter being one of the nation’s top defensive backs, NFL scouts believe Hunter should focus on playing wide receiver.

The dual-threat playmaker plays on both sides of the ball for the Buffaloes, but his ability on offense has scouts at the next level talking.

Miller spoke on Hunter in a recent 2025 scouting piece, saying, “His talent is readily apparent, but he is hard to rank because he has two standout positions. Scouts I’ve spoken to prefer him at receiver, where Hunter’s speed and electric ability with the ball in his hands are best utilized, whereas, at cornerback, he would need to focus on technique more and rely less on winning with speed.”

To Miller’s credit, Hunter posted the second-most receiving yards of any athlete at Colorado despite missing several games due to an injury sustained against Colorado State. The Georgia native recorded 57 grabs for 721 yards and five scores, trailing Colorado’s leading receiver Xavier Weaver by 187 yards.

While his offensive production is a nice portion of Hunter’s game, his ability to neutralize elite wide receivers is going to be what helps him earn a first-round NFL Draft grade.

Players like Hunter have had success operating on both sides of the ball at the NFL level in the past, notably including his current head coach, Deion Sanders. With Hunter possessing massive upside, his future suitor is likely to get the ball in his hands in any way possible.
