What Food Would Each Big 12 Team Bring to a Super Bowl Party
It’s Super Bowl Sunday as the Chiefs play the Eagles in the biggest football game of the year. It’s the most-watched event in America every year and it brings millions of Americans together around the TV to watch football, the halftime show, the commercials, and yes, eat and drink together as well.
So it’s time to have some fun and put together a Big 12 edition of what each team would bring to a hypothetical Super Bowl party.
Baylor Bears: Brisket
BBQ will be a common theme, and Baylor gets first dibs with some brisket from Vitek’s. You can’t go wrong here and it will be a crowd pleaser.
BYU Cougars: Fruit Platter
The healthy and clean eaters of the bunch, BYU brings the fruit platter to start the party and make everyone feel slightly better about themselves before indulging. It’s a nice play by the Cougars.
Cincinnati Bearcats: Skyline Chili
It’s a Cincinnati staple. And as the new invites to the party, they want to bring something local. The people of Cincinnati enjoy their chili spooned over freshly made pasta and topped with a combination of chopped onions, shredded Cheddar cheese, refried beans or kidney beans, and crushed oyster crackers. It will be a real hit or a real miss at the party. But at least it’s authentic.
Houston Cougars: Jambalaya
Houston has a Cajun flair to its food, and since we’ve got the BBQ portion of the Super Bowl party all covered (more to come below), Houston wants to do something different that no one else in the conference can accomplish. Jambalaya will be a nice compliment to the other dishes being brought.
Iowa State Cyclones: Busch Light
Someone has to bring the booze, right? Or at least the cheap booze. Iowa State won’t even have to go out and make the purchase, just go to some of their fans’ homes and peak in the beer garage in the fridge and grab what you need for the party.
Kansas Jayhawks: Burnt Ends
The team closest to Kansas City has to bring the BBQ staple of the town, with some burnt ends. I won’t go into picking favorites (OK, fine, Joe’s), but there are so many options of quality burnt ends, you can’t screw it up. They can make a nice appetizer or become part of the main course.
Kansas State Wildcats: Sides Galore
The Cats don’t want to be shown up by their in-state rivals, but they can’t go with BBQ and top the burnt ends, so K-State goes for the quantity play over quality, and brings so many high-end sides for the BBQ the party-goers are blown away: beans, coleslaw, spicy slaw, potato salad, and corn.
Oklahoma Sooners: Fried-Onion Burger Sliders
The Sooners don’t want to try too hard, since they won’t be at this party next year, but they don’t want to embarrass themselves either, so given what’s already being brought to the party, sliders are a fan favorite and might bring some good will for them within the conference.
Oklahoma State Cowboys: Calf Fries
Someone has to bring them, and something tells me Oklahoma State might bring an extra large portion for their friends in Norman.
Texas Longhorns: Tex-Mex
As the team in the heart of Tex-Mex country, I’ll expect Texas to bring fajitas, nachos, and any dish that uses beef, black beans, canned vegetables, wheat flour, or yellow cheese. It’s the least they can
TCU Horned Frogs: Red Wine
In the interest of expanding the drink options, TCU brings finely-aged bottles of red wine. It’s an assortment from Cabernet Sauvignon to Pinot Noir, mixing in some Malbecs as well. This is what they expect in their football suites, so this is what they will bring to the party.
Texas Tech Red Raiders: Ranch Water
It was founded in West Texas, and to the credit of Tech, everyone isn’t interested in drinking the Busch Light that Iowa State brought to the party, or the red wine, courtesy of TCU. A third option is needed. Well done, Tech.
UCF Knights: Fish Tacos
Someone has to bring something with some fish in it, and why not our new friends in Florida? Fish tacos are a hit, perfect for a Super Bowl party, and will be welcomed amongst all the other options at the Super Bowl party.
West Virginia Mountaineers: Wings
No one brought the wings just yet, so West Virginia got right on that. You need them at a Super Bowl party, and WVU decided to bring some of the best wings in town, from Kegler’s to the Big 12 Super Bowl party. Can’t go wrong there.
