If Baylor had its way, Bryce Petty would connect on a long bomb or Shock Linwood would break loose for a big run every time.
But during Big 12 games, the Bears have been getting into too many third-and-long situations and failing to convert them into first downs.
Baylor is tied for last with Kansas with a 29.0 third-down conversion percentage. The Bears have converted just 20 of 69 third downs in four Big 12 games, a stark difference from their three nonconference games when they converted 29 of 49 third downs for a 59.2 percentage.
In their 41-27 loss to West Virginia, the No. 12 Bears converted just three of 16 third downs.
“It’s execution,” Baylor coach Art Briles said. “We were not as good as we needed to be without question in Morgantown. The other six games we were pretty good. You’d like to be perfect every snap, but we weren’t and a lot of that was very much self inflicted. And to me that’s the issue.”
