Baylor to Hire Gary Patterson as ‘Senior Level Strategic Consultant’: Report
According to a report from SicEm365’s Colt Barber, Baylor head coach Dave Aranda is set to hire former TCU head coach Gary Patterson to the Bears’ football staff as a “Senior Level Strategic Consultant.”
As Barber explains it, Patterson will help the Bears prepare for upcoming opponents with scouting breakdowns as well as self-scouting BU’s offense and defense during the season.
With 22 seasons of experience as the head coach in Fort Worth, Patterson certainly brings an intimate knowledge of what to look for when scouting teams in the Big 12, making this hire a no-brainer for Aranda.
Over his 22 seasons, Patterson led TCU to a record of 181-79, including an 11-6 record in bowl games and six conference championships across three conferences, including one in the Big 12.
The 2010 and 2014 seasons highlight the best years of Patterson’s tenure, as the Horned Frogs won the Rose Bowl and finished second in the AP Poll at 13-0 in 2010, and finished the 2014 season as Peach Bowl Champions at 12-1 and No. 3 nationally.
Adding Patterson to the coaching staff is a huge deal for Dave Aranda, who has recently changes his tactics on the defensive side of the ball after the Bears failed to live up to his pedigree over the past two seasons.
Aranda plans to work directly alongside defensive coordinator Matt Powledge and will call the defense in 2024 in addition to coaching linebackers. With Patterson now looking over things from a scouting perspective, Aranda has a trustworthy set of eyes that he can trust to help prepare the coaching staff ahead of every week.
Patterson did not coach in 2023, but did spend a season at Texas under Steve Sarkisian as a Special Assistant to the Head Coach, and helped with the analysis of the defense there in Austin. Now, Patterson will be back in the Big 12 once more, and with his third program in the conference.
