Baylor Hiring Jake Spavital as Next Offensive Coordinator

NCAA Football: Baylor at Cincinnati

Baylor appears to have found its next offensive coordinator as the Bears are expected to hire Jake Spavital as their next play-caller, according to Sic’Em365’s David Smoak.

After Baylor decided to retain Dave Aranda following a 3-9 season in 2023, the Bears dismissed offensive coordinator Jeff Grimes after BU’s offense dropped to 70th nationally in total offense and failed to reach 20 points in five games this season.

Spavital, former head coach of the Texas State Bobcats, spent the 2023 season as the offensive coordinator at Cal. He will make a return to the Lone Star State where he also spent time as the Co-OC and quarterbacks coach at Texas A&M.

At Baylor, Spavital will call the plays and coach quarterbacks, something he’s done at each of his last five stops (aside from his stint as head coach at Texas State).

In Spavital’s lone season at Cal, he improved an offense that ranked 96th nationally in scoring (23.9 ppg) to 40th (31.6 ppg) this year and helped RB Jaydn Ott lead the Pac-12 in rushing with 114.5 yards per game.

With Dave Aranda in a must-win situation in 2024, this hire needs to hit for the Bears, and in a big way if the fourth-year head coach wants to make it past his fifth year in Waco.
