Jeff Traylor Interviewed with Houston on Tuesday
It’s been less than a week since Houston fired head coach Dana Holgorsen after a 4-8 campaign in the Cougars’ first year as a part of the Big 12 Conference, and the search for his replacement is still ongoing.
Several candidates for the job have emerged, including Tulane head coach Willie Fritz, former TCU coach Gary Patterson, and Texas special teams coordinator Jeff Banks. However, one of the most intriguing candidates for the job is UTSA head coach Jeff Traylor, who has turned the Roadrunners’ program into a consistent winner.
According to Houston Chronicles’ Justin Duarte, Traylor has interviewed for the vacancy at Houston, which should excite the Cougars’ fan base. According to Duarte, a person with “knowledge of the situation” says that Traylor has interviewed not once, but twice for the job.
With the football program being founded in 2011, UTSA has a very young history, but its best years have certainly come under Traylor. In the last four seasons, Traylor has maintained a 22-2 conference record, including 18 straight wins over conference opponents at home. He claimed back-to-back CUSA championships in 2021 and 2022 and was one win shy of an AAC Championship Game appearance in 2023, the Roadrunners’ first season in the conference.
To put his success into perspective, in the six seasons prior to Traylor’s arrival, UTSA had won just 26 games, but in his four seasons at the helm the Roadrunners have a cumulative record of 38-14.
Prior to taking the UTSA job, Traylor also served as an assistant coach with Texas, SMU, and Arkansas, giving him a solid coaching pedigree and plenty of his own success to stand on. If Houston can land Traylor’s services, he’d be an impressive addition to an already wildly competitive group of coaches in the Big 12.
