Baylor Lands Toledo Transfer QB Dequan Finn
Dave Aranda and the Baylor Bears are coming off a disappointing 3-9 season in which many believed could cost the head coach his job just two seasons removed from a Big 12 Championship.
Over the past two seasons, Aranda’s teams have been plagued by inconsistent defense, but more specifically, subpar quarterback play. Blake Shapen has failed to live up to his first-half performance in the 2021 Big 12 Championship, going 8-13 as a starter since then. In 2023, Shapen completed 61.7% of his attempts for 2,188 yards and 13 touchdowns to three interceptions, adding four scores on the ground.
Shapen entered the transfer portal after the conclusion of the regular season, leaving Baylor to look for another option at the position, as Sawyer Robertson is certainly not the solution based on what we saw from him this year (56.4%, 2 TD, 4 INT).
On Sunday, the Bears landed the answer to their biggest heading into a pivotal 2024 season by landing Toledo transfer quarterback Dequan Finn.
Finn was incredible in 2023, leading the Rockets to a MAC Championship Game appearance, where they lost to Miami (OH), 23-14. Still, Finn led Toledo to an 11-1 record in the regular season and was one of the most dangerous players in the Mid-American Conference, throwing for 2,657 yards and 22 touchdowns to nine interceptions, adding 563 yards and seven scores on the ground.
The 6-foot-2, 205-pound junior has been at Toledo since 2019 and has three years of starting experience under his belt, totaling 7,070 yards passing and 63 touchdowns to 23 interceptions. On the ground, he’s amassed 1,836 yards (4.7 ypc) and 25 touchdowns, making him a true dual-threat quarterback.
With new offensive coordinator Jake Spavital having past experience coaching players like Geno Smith, Johnny Manziel, and Brandon Weeden, it’s fair to expect big numbers from Finn in his final year as Spavital is likely to make the system very friendly to his skillset.
