Horns Welcome North Texas for Season Opener: Texas will open its first season under Charlie Strong by playing host to North Texas on Saturday (7 p.m. Central). The Longhorns won all nine of the previous meetings with the Mean Green. The teams last met in 2006 with UT rolling to a 56-7 win in Austin. The series began in 1976 and each meeting has been played in Austin. The Longhorns have faced just four of the 13 current members of Conference USA and lead each series (also Florida Atlantic, 2-0; Rice, 71-21-1; UTEP, 4-0)
Texas Begins the Strong Era: Texas will open its 122nd season in program history under the guidance of Charlie Strong who was hired in January as the school’s 29th head coach, but just sixth in the last 58 years. Strong spent the past four seasons as Louisville head coach, re-energizing a program that had a 15-21 record in the three years prior to his arrival. He posted a 37-15 record, which included a pair of Big East Conference Championships (2011, 2012). Strong was named Big East Coach of the Year in both 2010 and 2012, and led the Cardinals to four bowl appearances with three wins. Over the past two years, Louisville was the nation’s fourth-winningest program, posting a 23-3 record (88.5 percent). Prior to his stint at Louisville, Strong was a long-time successful defensive coordinator, spending four years at South Carolina (1999-2002) and seven at Florida (2003-09).
UT in Openers: In its previous 121 years of football, UT is 101-17-3 (.847) in season-opening games. The Longhorns are 79-7-2 (.909) when opening the year at home. UT has played the season opener at home in 18 of the last 19 years (2010 vs. Rice). The Horns have won 14 straight season openers. Charlie Strong won three of his four season openers at Louisville.
