For about a decade, the running offseason joke in the Big 12 was that Texas was finally going to “be back” in a given year.
In 2023, the long-running run turned into reality, however, as the Longhorns finished the regular season with an 11-1 record and an 8-1 record in Big 12 play, their only loss coming in a classic Red River Rivalry against Oklahoma.
After earning a bid to the Big 12 Championship, Texas ran roughshod through Oklahoma State to the tune of 49-21 and raised their first Big 12 Championship Trophy since 2009.
The victory would send Texas into the College Football Playoff, where they would eventually fall to Washington, but the program’s resurgence in Austin has the nation believing that 2024 could be the year when UT wins it all.
If they can do that, there would be some serious hardware involved, but then again, the hardware that the Longhorns are leaving the Big 12 with is pretty impressive in its own right. On Wednesday, UT unveiled its Big 12 Championship rings on social media, and they are, well, Texas-sized.
Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers is the name engraved on this particular ring, with a “2023 College Football Playoff” logo opposite of it.
The face of the ring has the Longhorn logo front and center with a Championship trophy right behind it.
The post, which reads, “Went out on top,” gives one last jab at the Big 12’s other programs before leaving for the SEC in less than two weeks. Texas will open the 2024 season against Colorado State on August 31, with kickoff from Austin set for 2:30 p.m. CT on ESPN.
