High-Profile Nebraska Football Player Arrested for Burglary

Just days before kicking off the Matt Rhule era at Nebraska, a high-profile Cornhusker has brought a major distraction to the program after his arrest on Tuesday morning.

Nebraska tight end Arik Gilbert was arrested on burglary charges shortly before 2:00 a.m. on Tuesday morning, with HuskerOnline’s Sean Callahan being the first to break the news.

“On Tuesday, August 29, 2023, just before 2 a.m., Lincoln Police were dispatched to a report of a burglary at SJ’s Liquor and Vape Shop at 2645 O Street,” the statement from the Lincoln County Police Department reads. “Upon arrival, officers observed a glass door that had been shattered with large cement chunks from the parking lot. Officers observed the suspect walking toward the exit carrying a bag. Officers arrested 21-year-old Arik Gilbert of Lincoln without incident. He was taken to the Lancaster County Jail for burglary.

“The total value of the stolen items in the bag was $1,672.07 and included a variety of vape products, Delta 8, cigars, and lighters. Damages to the business were approximately $650.”

Gilbert was one of Nebraska’s biggest additions this offseason, after he transferred in from Georgia in January.

Rated as a five-star prospect and the No. 5 overall player in the class of 2020, Gilbert began his career at LSU before deciding to transfer to Georgia after one season. He missed the majority of the 2021 season and appeared in just three games for UGA, totaling two receptions for 16 yards and one touchdown.

Since he’d already used his one-time transfer exemption, Gilbert needed a waiver from the NCAA to be eligible this season. His waiver case is still unresolved as of this time, and would not have traveled for Nebraska’s opener against Minnesota on Thursday. Now, it appears that Gilbert is facing much bigger issues, as he’s currently still being held at Lancaster County Department of Corrections.

Nebraska and Minnesota are set for kickoff at 7:00 p.m. CT on Thursday on FOX.
