REPORT: Steve Sarkisian’s New Contract Puts Buyout Over $54M in 2024

Syndication: Austin American-Statesman

According to documents obtained by On3, the Texas Longhorns have made it incredibly hard for another team to come snooping around in hopes of luring their head coach away from Austin.

Inside Texas obtained documentation of Sarkisian’s recent contract extension and found that the Longhorns would owe him a whopping $54.3 million, or 85% of his contract, if they decided to move on from him in 2024.

After leading Texas to its first-ever College Football Playoff appearance in 2023, Sarkisian agreed to a new deal in January that significantly increased his salary–to the tune of $10.3 million in 2024.

Furthermore, Sarkisian is also due an annual raise of $100,000 up to $10.9 million in 2030.

This is a masterclass deal for Sarkisian and his agent, who locked in one heck of a deal with UT ahead of the pending move to the SEC. If things were to fall apart in 2024, he’ll have plenty of room to breathe with that kind of buyout. Plus, if Texas wanted to move on in 2025, he’d be due $45,475,000 before the Longhorns could show him the door.

Take a look at his buyout per year, courtesy of On3.

In a world where job security comes at a premium, that’s about as good as it gets.

Just don’t ask the folks in College Station about it.
