Should Arch Manning ‘Try and Find Somewhere Else to Play?’
In case you checked out on college football after the season ended, there’s a lot going on across the country right now.
The spring transfer portal is open, and big-time players are leaving their current homes for a chance elsewhere, but a few people are wondering if one of the bigger names in the sport could be the next one to make a splash.
Texas held its annual spring game on Saturday, and with the Longhorns coming off a College Football Playoff appearance and heading into Year 1 in the SEC, there’s plenty of excitement in Austin. But when redshirt freshman Arch Manning lit up the field with a sterling performance in front of thousands of screaming Longhorn fans, the excitement turned into something else entirely.
On his very first pass attempt, Manning connected with DeAndre Moore for a 75-yard touchdown. From there, he’d complete his next nine passes to start 10-for-10 and finish the first half going 11-for-13 for 189 yards with two touchdowns.
He’d finish the day going 19-for-26 for 355 yards and three touchdowns with one interception, sparking a fierce debate among the Texas faithful about who should be starting at quarterback in Austin in 2024.
Many folks believe Manning should start over Quinn Ewers, and if he doesn’t, he should start weighing his options elsewhere.
One of those people is Barrett Sallee, the host of the “Smothered & Covered” college football podcast.
“If it were me, my priorities would’ve changed after that spring game, and I would try to find somewhere else to play,” Sallee said of Manning. “I’m not a Manning. I don’t have as much money as the Manning family, but at some point, if you’re going to get paid a lot more and get a chance to start, that to me is more important than staying loyal to a school I had no loyalty to before, making less money, and not playing football.
“To me, it is that simple.”
Sallee brings up an excellent point when pointing out that someone might be willing to outbid Texas for his services, but another team could also give him a chance to start right away. Should Arch look for other opportunities or just wait for his turn in Austin?
