The 2024 college football season is still a few months away, but with spring football now in the rearview mirror, it’s time for hype season to start.

The Big 12 feels about as wide open as it ever has, and much of that has to do with the tremendous depth of the conference. There are legitimately eight or nine teams that could make an argument that they will contend for a conference title in 2024.

One contributing factor to that is an impressive number of playmakers at quarterback in the league, and perhaps none of them are generating more excitement than Kansas State sophomore Avery Johnson.

The second-year phenom out of the Sunflower State was good enough as a true freshman that he pushed Will Howard out of Manhattan. Howard, who left on great terms, is now the early favorite to start at Ohio State next season if that tells you anything.

The Johnson hype is real in Vegas, too, as he leads all Big 12 players in Heisman odds at the moment. According to FanDuel, Johnson has the 12th-best odds nationally to win the award, with +2500 odds.

While significantly behind the favorite, UGA quarterback Carson Beck (+750), Johnson has a real chance to be one of the most electric players in college football this upcoming season. He’ll share a backfield with DJ Giddens and Dylan Edwards, arguably one of the best running back duos in the country, and should operate behind a good offensive line.

He’s not the only Big 12 player to make the list of Heisman contenders, though, as several of the league’s stars are on the list, as seen below:

  • Avery Johnson, QB, Kansas State (+2500)
  • Noah Fifita, QB, Arizona (+3100)
  • Jalon Daniels, QB, Kansas (+4000)
  • Shedeur Sanders, QB, Colorado (+4000)
  • Cam Rising, QB, Utah (+4000)
  • Travis Hunter, WR/DB, Colorado (+6500)
  • KJ Jefferson, QB, UCF (+10000)
  • Tetairoa McMillan, WR, Arizona (+15000)
  • Behren Morton, QB, Texas Tech (+15000)
  • Ollie Gordon, RB, Oklahoma State (+15000)
  • Josh Hoover, QB, TCU (+15000)
  • Rocco Becht, QB, Iowa State (+18000)
  • Dequan Finn, QB, Baylor (+18000)
  • Alan Bowman, QB, Oklahoma State (+18000)
  • Garrett Greene, QB, West Virginia (+20000)
  • Tahj Brooks, RB, Texas Tech (+25000)

Several former Big 12 players are also listed high on the odds board as well, with Quinn Ewers (+900), Dillon Gabriel (+1000), and Will Howard (+1300) all among the top four.
