Big 12 Baseball Saturday Six-Pack: Texas and Oklahoma Clinch Series While TCU Keeps Their Postseason Hopes Alive
Is there anything better than cold beer and baseball? It’s a combination that is hard to beat during the season. No matter what kind of beer you drink (or how many), let’s take a look at some of the best action on the Big 12 baseball diamond from Saturday with a nice six pack.
Best Game
TCU at Baylor
While TCU got on the board first with a Logan Maxwell home run, Baylor wasted little time responding to that.
The Bears took the lead in the bottom of the first inning when Cortlan Castle drove in a pair of runs to go up 2-1.
Baylor followed that with a big second inning by scoring four runs to take a 6-1 lead. In that inning, Ty Johnson and Daniel Altman went deep.
Slowly but surely, the Horned Frogs started chipping away at the lead. Kurtis Bryne drove in a quick run before going yard along with Anthony Silva to make it a one run game.
The Horned Frogs tied the game in the sixth inning thanks to Anthony Silva.
Neither team would score a run for the next few innings and all of a sudden, this one was heading to extras. TCU put up two runs in the top of the eleventh to take a two-run lead.
Unfortunately for Baylor, they couldn’t quite keep up. Not only did TCU take game two but they also took the series. Now Baylor has to win on Sunday to avoid the sweep.
Best Win
Texas over #14 Oklahoma State
I could have easily gone with Oklahoma beating Texas Tech, but I wanted to focus on the Longhorns here. Texas jumped out to an early lead and then used a key eighth inning to win the game at the plate with Max Belyeu and Rylan Galvan.
Plus, they had some excellent pitching to back them up.
With the win, Texas took the series in two games and will look to complete the sweep on Sunday. There are still a few games left in the season, but Texas has now put themselves into a position to win a conference title once again.
Worst Loss
Texas Tech
I talked about the Red Raiders on Friday night and here I am once again talking about them negatively. Why? Because they have now lost five straight conference games and are sitting at 12-14 in Big 12 play. At one point they were 12-9 and a lock to make the postseason. Now Sunday becomes a must win to avoid being swept two weekends in a row.
Saturday MVP
Oklahoma 3B Anthony Mackenzie
Anthony played a crucial role in Oklahoma’s win over Texas Tech on Saturday. He knocked in a run in the first inning before smashing this key homer in the third.
Pitcher of the Day
Kansas RHP Dominic Voegele
Dominic shut down a good Kansas State lineup on Saturday going six full innings without giving up a single run.
Best Home Run
Texas RF Max Belyeu
Max hit a two-run bomb that gave Texas the lead in the eighth inning.
