Big 12 Baseball Friday Six-Pack: Oklahoma State Crushes Texas Tech While Cincinnati Wins Their Third Straight Conference Series
Is there anything better than cold beer and baseball? It’s a combination that is hard to beat during the season. No matter what kind of beer you drink (or how many), let’s take a look at some of the best action on the Big 12 baseball diamond from Friday with a nice six pack.
Best Game
Kansas State at West Virginia
With postseason hopes on the line, we saw a great opening game between these two teams. Kansas State got on the board first when Brady Day knocked in a run.
But West Virginia quickly responded in the second inning as Skylar King hit an RBI single.
The Wildcats would retake the lead in the third inning thanks to Kaelen Culpepper and Nick English.
Reed Chumley’s solo blast in the sixth put the Mountaineers back within one.
But Brady Day answered right back in the seventh with another clutch hit.
West Virginia one again pulled within a run, but this would end up being the last run scored of the game.
Kansas State held on for the 4-3 win and took game one of the series. And most importantly it put them above .500 in conference play as they now have a 13-12 record.
Best Win
Cincinnati over BYU
I could have gone with Texas or Oklahoma State here, but the Bearcats are once again the talk of the weekend after their series win against BYU on Friday. Cincinnati has now won four straight games and three straight conference series. They are 15-11 in Big 12 play and with each win they move closer to a potential postseason berth. The job that coach Jordan Bischel has done this season has been incredible and he is without a doubt a serious candidate for coach of the year.
Worst Loss
Texas Tech
After being swept back-to-back weekends, I expected Texas Tech to show some fight on Friday and they completely fell apart. Oklahoma State put up 11 runs in the first three innings and this game was pretty much over within the first nine outs. Pitcher Ryan Free had a rough day on the mound and the bats were ice cold until the eighth inning but by then it was already too late. Texas Tech has now lost seven Big 12 games in a row.
Friday MVP
Houston 1B Justin Murray
Justin got the game started with a solo home run in the third inning and then he followed that up with a two-run blast in the fourth. He would finish the game with a total of five RBIs.
Pitcher of the Day
Oklahoma State LHP Sam Garcia
Sam pitched seven full innings and only allowed a single run during his time on the mound. He also struck out ten batters on Friday night.
Best Home Run
Oklahoma State 1B Colin Brueggemann
Colin hit a grand slam to put the cherry on top of Oklahoma State’s big win over Texas Tech. Oklahoma State put a video of all the home runs hit on Friday and you can find Colin’s grand slam on the very last part.
