Kansas State’s Gabby Gregory Named Big 12 Women’s Player of Week

Big 12 Men's Basketball Tournament Trophy.

Kansas State guard Gabby Gregory was named the Big 12 Women’s Basketball Player of the Week after making her debut with the Wildcats.

Baylor’s Bella Fontleroy was named the Big 12 Freshman of the Week.

Gregory spent three seasons at Oklahoma and was a double-digit scorer for the Sooners in each of her first two seasons, before an injury relegated her to a part-time role last season. She transferred to Kansas State in the offseason.

Gregory averaged 22.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists las week as she led the Wildcats to a pair of wins. She helped K-State erase a 13-point first-quarter deficit in a neutral site game against Wisconsin, scoring a game-high 25 points in the 77-63 win at American Family Field in Milwaukee. That game happened to be the 1,000th win in K-State history.

In the season opener against Central Arkansas, Gregory was 7-for-11 from the field to score 19 points.

With 44 points last week, she scored the most of any Wildcats newcomer in her first two games in 20 years.

Fontleroy was one of the biggest pieces of coach Nicki Collen’s first major recruiting class at Baylor. She averaged 14.0 points, 5.5 rebounds and shot 61.1 percent from the floor as Baylor defeated Lamar and Incarnate Word.

Fontleroy scored 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting, with eight rebounds in her Baylor debut, an 88-50 win over Lamar. Later in the week, she made her first collegiate start against Incarnate Word, and she scored 11 points in a 71-42 victory.

That made her the first Big 12 freshman to post back-to-back double-digit scoring games this season.
