Big 12 Women’s Basketball Week 2 Preview, Schedule, TV Info

Rori Harmon, Aaliyah Moore and Shay Holle.

The second week of the 2022-23 Big 12 women’s basketball season is here. Our Week 2 primer gets you ready for the week ahead in Big 12 basketball.

Below you’ll find our game of the week, our mid-major danger game of the week, notes to watch, the week’s schedule with TV information, and links to other useful college basketball information during the season.

Game of the Week

Texas at UConn, Monday. I mean, duh right? The Longhorns and the Huskies are in the Top 10 and it represents a huge test for the Longhorns this early in the season. Texas had a test like this early in the season last year when it went to defending national champion Stanford and won. This time, it’s a UConn team that is without its best player this season, Paige Bueckers. Texas could be without guard Rori Harmon. UConn could be just the first of a ranked opponent-heavy week for Texas. The Longhorns head to the Battle 4 Atlantis this weekend, and teams like Louisville, Tennessee, and South Dakota State are all ranked and potential opponents after their opener with Marquette.

Mid-Major Danger Game of the Week

UT Arlington at Kansas, Wednesday; UT Arlington at Oklahoma, Sunday. Two for the price of one this week as the Mavericks make a spin through Big 12 country. UTA is not to be overlooked. It won 20 games last year, won the Sun Belt Women’s Conference Tournament, and pushed Iowa State to the fourth quarter of their first-round NCAA Tournament game in Ames, Iowa. The Cyclones won by seven. The Jayhawks and the Sooners should take UTA seriously. Watch the Oklahoma game closely. It will be the Sooners’ third game of the week.

Five Players to Watch

G Aijha Blackwell, Baylor: She’s averaged 20 points and seven rebounds in two games. She’s also shooting better than 70 percent. She’s everything that was advertised when she transferred from Missouri.

G Holly Kersgieter, Kansas: The vet picked up right where she left off with a 17-point game in Kansas’ opener.

G Lior Garzon, Oklahoma State: The Villanova transfer is off to a hot start for the Cowgirls.

G Knisha Godfrey, TCU: She blew the doors off with 26 points against Lipscomb. She scored just four against North Carolina. If she finds consistency, she’ll be a force.

G Bailey Maupin, Texas Tech: The true freshman debuted last week with a double-figure night in less than 20 minutes. Doesn’t look like she’s headed for a redshirt.

Team to Watch

Baylor. We’ve already highlighted the tough week that Texas has ahead. But the Bears should be 3-0 entering their Sunday showdown with Maryland at the Ferrell Center. Last year Baylor went to College Park, Md., and lost to the Terrapins, 79-76. At the time, both were ranked in the Top 10. This time, the pair should be ranked in the same area of the poll, just in the Top 20 as opposed to the Top 10. This is Baylor’s first big test without NaLyssa Smith, Queen Egbo, and Jordan Lewis. I’m interested to see how the Bears respond.

What Else to Watch?

The early window for 2023 recruits to sign ends on Tuesday. We’ll see how many more players sign before the window closes.

T-Rob Watch

Oklahoma guard Taylor Robertson is the Big 12 and Oklahoma career 3-Point record holder with 446 3-pointers. Entering her last season in Norman, she has the chance to leave Norman as the all-time NCAA leader in made 3-pointers, male or female. In each primer, we’ll track her progress.

Taylor Robertson: 451 (made five last week)

Men’s leader: Fletcher McGee (Wofford), 509

Needed to pass McGee: 59

Women’s leader: Kelsey Mitchell (Ohio State), 497

Needed to pass Mitchell: 47
